چکیده

Case 1, a female aged 38 years, had a partial congenital ptosis on the right side and an unduly wide palpebral fissure, amounting to a lid retraction, on the left (Fig. 1). Elevation of the right eye was completely absent and that of the left was markedly restricted (Fig. 2). On looking down, only the left eye moved downwards in a normal manner, while the right eye diverged (Fig. 3). The left upper eyelid followed the ipsilateral ocular movement in a normal manner but the right upper eyelid did not move downwards and the palpebral aperture remained open, simulating a pseudo-Graefe phenomenon of lid retraction on downward movement ofthe eyes (Fig. 4). Lateral versions and convergence were normal (Figs 5 and 6) and a general neurological examination revealed no other abnormality.

Marcus Gunn phenomenon with paradoxical oculo-palpebral movements.

THE following case of congenital ptosis with Marcus Gunn phenomenon (Gunn, 1883) is interesting because of its unusual association with multiple paradoxical oculo-palpebral movements (Duke-Elder, 1952). Case Report An 18-year-old girl came for cosmetic correction of a congenital ptosis of the right upper lid with alternate divergent strabismus of about 150. The Marcus Gunn phenomenon was also p...

Computer-assisted assessment of ocular synkinesis: a comparison of methods.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To define an objective, easy to perform, rapid method for the assessment of ocular synkinesis by employing both the Facial Assessment by Computer Evaluation software and a modification of the Glasgow Facial Palsy Scale. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective study. METHODS Fifty normal subjects and 50 patients with known ocular synkinesis were studied. Measurements of ocular synki...

Oculo-mandibular synkinesis.

Synkinetic movement of the mandible with ocular movement is a rare anomaly. Carmichael and Critchley (1925) noticed that, when the eyes were rapidly turned horizontally first to one side and then to the other, there was protrusion of the mandible with deviation to the contralateral side. The movement may be associated with depression of the contralateral and raising of the ipsilateral eyebrow. ...

Management of Facial Synkinesis with a Combination of BTX-A and Biofeedback: A Randomized Trial

Introduction: Synkinesis and facial asymmetry due to facial nerve palsy are distressing conditions that affect quality of life. Unfortunately, these sequelae of facial nerve palsy are unresolved. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a combination of biofeedback therapy and botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection for the management of synkinesis and asymmetry of facial muscles.  ...

Kinematic and Diffusion Tensor Imaging Definition of Familial Marcus Gunn Jaw-Winking Synkinesis

BACKGROUND Marcus Gunn jaw-winking synkinesis (MGJWS) is characterized by eyelid ptosis, which disappears during jaw movement. Familial MGJWS is an extremely rare condition. Some authors suggested that MGJWS is due to neural misdirection in the brainstem whereas others suggested that aberrant reinnervation or ephapse may be responsible for synkinetic activity. Pathogenesis of this condition is ...
